Maybe you have lost your job (or several jobs) due to “downsizing”, or “outsourcing”; perhaps your job description has changed, or you have been asked to relocate; possibly you have reached a dead-end in your current position, either in responsibility, compensation or both; or you are simply just tired of others telling you what to do, and controlling your life. Whatever the reason, you have decided you want to own your own business and want to become a successful entrepreneur.

There are many advantages to owning your own business. Probably the number one reason people want to do so is for the freedom that is offered as a business owner, rather than that available as an employee for someone else’s company, both in creativity and in time. But there are significant risks involved in starting a new business – - – and being unaware of these risks can cause failure, as the fact that nine out of ten new businesses ultimately fail attests.

While there is no way to eliminate all the risks associated with owning your own business, there are ways to avoid or overcome them, before they imbed themselves. This is what Michael Busch and his team will help you do through the Entrepreneur’s Handbook. By being aware of the risks involved up-front, you can improve your chances of becoming a successful entrepreneur through good planning, preparation, and insight. Whether you are considering starting a new business, buying an existing business, or buying a franchise, all viable options, you will find this “course” invaluable, saving you hours and hours of headache (and maybe heartache), thousands of ill-spent dollars, and maybe even failure.

As a small business coach, Michael Busch has helped a countless number of individuals take control of their business lives (see Testimonials). Some of these individuals are just like you, wanting to purchase an existing or start a new business. And as the founder of the most successful franchise in drugstore history, he certainly understands the role and responsibilities of both the franchisor and the prospective franchisee.

As he so aptly states:
“The future of the world is in entrepreneurial businesses. Large corporations with today’s level of productivity are not creating new jobs at any appreciable rate. Therefore, a large number of individuals find themselves at a crossroads in their business life.”
“If I can help people to take control of their business lives and succeed, then I will have introduced thousands of individuals to a more satisfying business life and hence, hopefully a more fulfilling personal life. It truly is the crowning moment for me.”

The following is an outline of what is covered section by section:

Starting a New Business

• An introspective look at who should consider starting a new business – - – and who should not; who is likely to succeed – - – and who is likely not to make it.
• Choosing a business. Whether you are starting a business in an industry where you have experience or not, there are definite methods to use in identifying the right opportunity.
• An extensive look into business planning, both from an operational perspective and for use in obtaining necessary financing. It includes not only how to write a business plan but an actual look at some very successful plans that raised significant capital.
• Forming your business. A detailed look at the various legal structures, to help you in determining what is best for you and your opportunity.
• Selecting your professionals. How to choose the right attorney and accounting professionals.
• How will you exit your business? No one should enter business ownership without having studied the various ways in which they can exit the business. The course describes how to put exit strategies into the planning process.
• Financing strategies, and what is appropriate for your new business. A detailed look at every conceivable method of financing, describing “what goes with what” and the benefits and limitations associated with each. Buying an Existing Business
• Helping you to understand your motivation to buy a particular business. Many people buy a business for the wrong reasons, and they quickly become disillusioned.
• Understanding the seller’s motivation is essential to your decision and subsequent negotiations.
• A “quick-check” analysis to determine if the acquisition is worth pursuing. Your time is very valuable and therefore, the sooner you rule the business out or in, the better off you will be.
• In the Entrepreneur’s Handbook we spend a great deal of time together understanding what “due diligence” is necessary before reaching a firm decision. Understanding how to conduct a due diligence examination will provide great comfort as you go through the process.
• Pricing and negotiation of your transaction, terms and conditions of purchase and how to structure a transaction is discussed in detail.
• The business plan for buying an existing business does differ from that required for starting a new business. You will see examples and fully understand how to write a winning plan that will gain approval from banks or outside investors.
• If you need to finance your acquisition, the “Handbook” will tell you how to do it.
• Finally, we get to the documentation and closing of the transaction stage. You will have a comprehensive understanding of what is needed to finalize your purchase.

Buying a Franchise

• Welcome to the world of franchising. The course provides you with an understanding of the definition of franchising and the advantages and disadvantages of buying a franchise.
• Introspection. Are you suited to be a successful and happy franchisee? Or are you too much of an individualist.
• Time is spent on understanding how to find the right franchise for you.
• The due diligence process for pursuing a franchise is a bit different from that associated with buying an existing business. Everything you need to do is fully explained.
• This section like those before it, fully discusses business planning and financing of your franchise.

Whether it is your intention to start a new business, buy an existing one or enter the world of franchising, the Entrepreneur’s Handbook will walk you through the process.

This is a study course based on actual experiences and includes examples and exhibits of documentation from business plans to purchase and sales agreements, and that which falls in between.
